“In a year rocked by a pandemic, #endsars protest, slide into recession twice in a row and an unconventional shut down of the nation’s border with all the neighbouring countries, 53% of
Nigerians view the coronavirus pandemic to be the most significant event of 2020.
The COVID-19 (53%) surpasses other groundbreaking and notable events that occurred during the last year. The #EndSars protest against police brutality and government ineptitude (40%) places a distant second. The economy slumping into another recession comes next (7%) and no one believes that the closing of the border deserves a mention in a year filled with emotions and intrigues.
Nigerians under the age of 50 (91%) are more
likely than other demographic group to perceive the pandemic as the most impactful event
of 2020. Among Nigerians, a plurality (53%) say the Covid-19 pandemic was the most
consequential a similar 40% of the population think the #EndSars protest is the most noteworthy
(or, perhaps, because of) the hardships and struggles of 2020, a majority of Nigerians
(78%) are more optimistic than pessimistic (16%) about what is ahead for the country in 2021.
Nigerians are however pessimistic (47%) that the Buhari led Federal government can turn things around in 2021, a slightly lower number (33%) are optimistic under his leadership come 2021.
How the Survey was Conducted
Nature of the Sample: Gates Polls of 1,200 National Adults.
This survey of 1,200 adults was conducted December 27th through December 29th, 2020 by Gates Polls. Adults 18 years of age and older residing in Nigeria contacted on online and via mobile numbers and interviewed by polling form and phone using live interviewers. Survey questions were available in English and translated in pigin, Ibo, Hausa, Yoruba where necessary.
Participants were randomly selected based upon a probabilistic sorting model to reflect a fair representation of all the geopolitical zones throughout the country. The participants were selected to ensure that each geopolitical zone was
represented in proportion to its population.
Mobile phones are treated as individual devices. After validation of age, residence in Nigeria, and willingness to participate.
Online surveys were done across social threads such as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp while interviews are typically
conducted with the person answering the phone. To increase coverage, this mobile sample was supplemented by respondents reached through random face-to-face interview. Within each household, a single respondent is selected through a random selection process to increase the
representativeness of traditionally under-covered survey populations. The samples were then combined and balanced to reflect the probabilistic model we adopted year estimates for age, gender, religion, and geopolitical zone. Results are statistically significant within ±4.3 percentage points.
The results for this subset are statistically significant within ±4.2 percentage points. It should be noted that although you may not see results listed for a certain group, it does not mean interviews were not completed with those individuals. It simply means the sample size is too small to report. The error margin was adjusted for sample weights and increases for cross-tabulations.
